Abstract

Esters of the general formula <FORM:0646764/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a saturated alkyl group containing 3 to 7 carbon atoms arranged in a straight line or in a chain branched at one point only, and R1 and R2 are alternatively iodine or a saturated alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms provided that one and only one of the two groups R1 and R2 is iodine, are prepared by esterifying an iodophenol of the general formula <FORM:0646764/IV (b)/2> with an acyl group RCO-, where R,R1 and R2 have the above significance, e.g. the diiodophenol may be reacted with an acid chloride in the presence or absence of a base such as pyridine or caustic alkali, or the diiodophenol may be reacted with an acid in the presence of thionyl chloride. A number of detailed examples are given.
