Abstract

The lactone of bis-(4-hydroxycoumarinyl-3) acetic acid of the formula <FORM:0675784/IV (b)/1> is prepared by heating bis-(4-hydroxycoumarinyl-3) acetic acid in an inert medium with a phosphorus halide, a thionyl halide or an alkyl monocarboxylic acid. When an alkyl monocarboxylic acid is employed, it is advantageous to add sulphur dioxide. In the examples, the above lactone is prepared, using phosphorus oxychloride, thionyl chloride and acetic acid.
