Abstract

Relates to penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0889066/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, mercapto, hydroxy, chloro, bromo or phenyl group, such as a -, b -, or g -pyridyl penicillin, and non-toxic salts thereof. The Specification refers to many other penicillins of the above formula. The penicillins may be prepared by reacting 6-amino-penicillanic acid, or a neutral salt thereof, with an acid chloride of the formula <FORM:0889066/IV (b)/2> or with a functional equivalent thereof as an acylating agent for a primary amino group, such as the corresponding carboxylic acid bromides, acid anhydrides and mixed anhydrides with other carboxylic acids.
