Abstract

Relates to acids of the general formula <FORM:0891279/IV (b)/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, wherein R1 is a cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl group or an aliphatic group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms inclusive and R2 is a cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl or C1-C6 alkyl group. Typical acids of the above formula are 6-(a -methylthiopropionamido), 6-(a -octadecylthiopropionamido), 6-(a -butylthioisovaleramido), 6-(a -allylthiopropionamido), 6-[a -(2-ethylhexyl)thiopropionamido], 6-(a -phenylthiopropionamido), 6-[a -(o-toluenethio)propionamido], 6-[a -(o-nitrophenylthio)propionamido], 6-[a -(p-chlorophenylthio)propionamido], 6-[a -(p-chlorophenylthio)isovaleramido], and 6-[a -(4-nitrophenylthio)caproamido] penicillanic acid. The compounds may be prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid or a neutral salt thereof with an acid chloride of the general formula <FORM:0891279/IV (b)/2> or with its functional equivalent as an acylating agent for a primary amino group such as the corresponding carboxylic acid bromides, acid anhydrides and mixed anhydrides with other carboxylic acids.
