Abstract

Relates to acids of the general formula <FORM:0890201/IV (b)/1> and non-toxic salts thereof wherein X is the grouping R-O- where R is a cyclopentyl cyclohexyl, trifluoroethyl, tetrafluoropropyl, allyl or alkyl group, or the grouping A-(CnH2n)-S-where A is a phenyl or substituted phenyl group and n is zero or an integer from 1 to 3. Typical acids of the above formula are 6-(b -benzylthiopropionamido) 6 - (b - phenethylthiopropion - amido), 6-[b -(a -phenylpropylthio)propionamido], 6 - (b ethoxypropionamido), 6 - (b - methoxy - propionamido), 6 - (b - allyloxypropionamido) and 6 - (b - isopropoxypropionamido) penicillanic acid. The compounds may be prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid, or a neutral salt thereof, with an acid chloride of the general formula X-CH2CH2CO-Cl or with its functional equivalent as an acylating agent for a primary amino group such as the corresponding carboxylic acid bromides, acid anhydrides and mixed anhydrides with other carboxylic acids.
