Abstract

Penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0891777/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and R2 is R1 or COOR1 or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring system, and non-toxic salts thereof. may be prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid, or a neutral salt thereof, with an acid chloride of the general formula <FORM:0891777/IV (b)/2> or with a functional equivalent thereof as an acylating agent for a primary amino group such as the corresponding carboxylic acid bromides, acid anhydrides, and mixed anhydrides with other carboxylic acids. Typical penicillins of the above formula are a -dimethylaminobenzyl-, piperidinomethyl-, N - carbobenzyloxy - N - methyl - aminomethyl-, and N-carbobenzyloxy-a -methylaminobenzyl-penicillin.
