Abstract

Relates to penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0894457/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group and R1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, such as methylaminomethyl and a -methylaminobenzyl penicillin, and non-toxic salts thereof. The penicillins may be prepared by coupling 6-aminopenicillanic acid with an acid of the general formula <FORM:0894457/IV (b)/2> having its amino group protected, or a salt thereof, and thereafter removing the protecting group under sufficiently mild conditions to avoid destruction of the penicillin nucleus.
