Abstract
Relates to penicillins of the formula <FORM:0908787/IV (b)/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, stand for alkyl or alkenyl radicals, optionally substituted, or wherein R1 stands for a radical of the formula R4(CH2)n wherein R4 stands for a branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, and wherein n stands for an integer from 0 to 6, R2 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, and R3 stands for hydrogen, or wherein R1 and R2 are joined together with the adjacent carbon atom to form a carbocylic radical, optionally substituted, and R3 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, and the salts thereof. The penicillins may be prepared by acylation of 6-aminopenicillanic acid with an appropriate acylating agent. Examples described the production of t-butyl-and 1,1,3,3 - tetramethyl - n - butyl - penicillin. Specification 876,516 and 878,233 are referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise an inert non-toxic diluent or carrier having admixed therewith a penicillin of the formula <FORM:0908787/VI/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, stand for alkyl or alkenyl radicals, optionally substituted, or wherein R1 stands for a radical of the formula R4(CH2)n, wherein R4 stands for a branched-chain alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, and wherein n stands for an integer from 0 to 6, R2 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, and R3 stands for hydrogen, or wherein R1 and R2 are joined together with the adjacent carbon atom to form a carbocyclic radical, optionally substituted, and R3 stands for hydrogen or an alkyl or alkenyl radical, optionally substituted, or a salt thereof, such as t - butyl- or 1,1,3,3 - tetramethyl - n - butyl-penicillin. The compositions may also contain a known penicillin such as benzyl-, phenoxy-methyl- or a -phenoxy-ethyl-penicillin, and may be in the form of tablets, capsules, dispersible powders, aqueous or non-aqueous solutions, suspensions or emulsions, or ointments.
