Abstract

Penicillins of the general formula: <FORM:0967890/C1/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, in which X represents a carboxylic group or a non-toxic ester or amide thereof, and R represents a vicinally bound divalent heterocyclic radical of the general formula: <FORM:0967890/C1/2> in which Y represents a nitrogen atom or the group =CH- and R1 and R2, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl radicals, or R1 and R2 together represent a fused benzene ring which may carry substituents, may be prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid with an acylating agent capable of providing an acyl radical of the general formula: <FORM:0967890/C1/3> particularly an acid chloride, mixed anhydride or cyclic anhydride. Examples describe the preparation of a number of non-toxic salts of penicillins of the above formula such as 3-carboxyquinoxalin -2-yl-penicillin, 3-carboxypyrid -2-yl-penicillin, 3-carboxy -5, 6-dimethylpyrazin -2- ylpenicillin and 3-carboxyquinol -2- ylpenicillin. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the above penicillins or non-toxic salts thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier in a standard medicinal dosage form such as tablets lozenges, solutions or suspensions.
