Abstract

The invention relates to penicillins of general formula <FORM:1030759/C2/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, in which Z is the carboxyl group or a non-toxic ester or amide thereof. Examples are for 3-carboxy-2-naphthyl -penicillin, 3 - n - propoxycarbonyl - 2 -naphthylpenicillin and 3 - anilinocarbonyl-2-naphthylpenicillin. Salts are those with conventional inorganic and organic bases. The penicillins are produced by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid with an acylating agent capable of providing an acyl radical of general formula <FORM:1030759/C2/2> in which Z is as defined above. The acylating agent may be an acid chloride, acid bromide, mixed anhydride or a cyclic acid anhydride. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the above penicillins or non-toxic salts thereof in admixture with a pharmaceutical carrier, e.g. as for tablets, lozenges, solutions, suspensions or emulsions. Other antibiotics, e.g. benzylpenicillin may be present. An intramammary injection for bovine mastitis is described.
