Abstract

Relates to penicillins of the general formula <FORM:0889070/IV (b)/1> where X is the group R or OR where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, and non-toxic salts thereof. The penicillin may be ethoxycarbonyl, benzoyl, acetyl, isobutyryl, n-valeryl, phenylacetyl, methoxycarbonyl, n-butoxycarbonyl, cyclohexyloxycarbonyl, phenoxycarbonyl, benzoyloxycarbonyl or hexahydrobenzoyl penicillin, and may be prepared by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid, or a neutral salt thereof, with an acid chloride of the general formula X.CO.CO.Cl or with a functional equivalent thereof as an acylating agent for a primary amino group, such as the corresponding carboxylic acid bromides, acid anhydrides, and mixed anhydrides with other carboxylic acids.
