Abstract

A penicillin salt of a dialkylaminoethyl ester of a 4-monalkylaminosalicyclic acid (except the diethylaminoethyl ester of 4-n-butylaminosalicylic acid) of general formula <FORM:0766329/IV(b)/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups, each of which contains not more than 4 carbon atoms, is prepared by reacting a penicillin with the appropriate ester. The penicillin is the free acid, or salt such as sodium or potassium penicillin, and may be any form, e.g. penicillin G, F, dihydro F, or K. The ester is the free base or salt with an organic or inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric, or N-oxide or N-hydrated oxide. Mixtures of the esters and/or penicillins may be reacted. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent as in the parent Specification. The salts may be used in the purification of penicillin from, e.g. organic solvent extracts of fermentation broths.
