Abstract

A penicillin salt of a beta piperidinoethyl ester of general formula <FORM:0766327/IV(b)/1> in which R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing not more than four carbon atoms, is prepared by reacting a penicillin with the appropriate piperidino ester. The penicillin is the free acid, or a salt such as sodium or potassium penicillin, and may be in any form, e.g. penicillin G, F, dihydro F or K. The ester is the free base, or a salt with an organic or inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, or N-oxide or N-hydrated oxide. Mixtures of esters and/or penicillins may be reacted. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent as in co-pending Specification 766,325. The salts may be used in the purification of penicillin from, e.g. organic solvent extracts of fermentation broths. Specification 766,326 is referred to.
