Abstract

A penicillin salt of the beta diethylaminoethyl ester of 4-aminosalicylic acid is prepared by reacting a penicillin with the beta diethylaminoethyl ester of 4-aminosalicylic acid. The penicillin is the free acid, or a salt such as sodium or potassium penicillin, and may be penicillin G, F, dihydro F or K. The ester is the free base, or a salt with an organic or inorganic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid or N-oxide or N-hydrated oxide. Mixtures of the esters and/or penicillins may be reacted. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent as in co-pending Specification 766,325. The salts may be used in the purification of penicillin from, e.g. solvent extracts of fermentation broths.
