N-carboxy-a -amino acid anhydrides are purified by crystallisation from an organic solvent containing from 5 to 20% of its volume of a compound of formula: <FORM:0854140/IV(b)/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, R3 is hydrogen or monovalent hydrocarbyl and R4 is hydrocarbyl.
