Abstract

Penicillin compounds of general formula <FORM:0721477/IV (b)/1> in which R represents an amino group or a lower alkyl group containing up to 3 carbon atoms and Pc represents penicillin in the acid form, are prepared by reacting a salt of a basic ester of a substituted 4-aminobenzoic acid of general formula <FORM:0721477/IV (b)/2> in which R has the meaning above, with a salt of penicillin using water as a solvent, or by reacting the free basic ester of a substituted 4-aminobenzoic acid of the above formula with the free penicillin acid in the presence of an organic solvent. The penicillin salt may be the sodium salt, and the basic ester salt the hydrochloride. Specified organic solvents are ether, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate or mixtures thereof. Examples describe the preparation of penicillin compounds of the above general formula wherein R is (a) amino, and (b) methyl.
