Abstract
Compounds of the formula <FORM:0771151/IV(b)/1> where R1 is hydrogen or methyl and R2 and R3 are alkyl groups of up to 4 carbon atoms, and acid addition salts thereof, are made by reacting 2 : 6-dimethyl aniline or 2 : 4 : 6-trimethyl aniline or a salt thereof with the mixed anhydride of a corresponding dialkylaminoacetic acid and an alkoxy or aralkoxy formic acid. The mixed anhydride may suitably be derived from ethoxy-, propoxy-, butoxy- or benzyloxyformic acid and may conveniently be prepared by reaction of the dialkylaminoacetic acid and a halogeno-formic ester. In examples: (1) the sodium salt of diethylaminoacetic acid is reacted with ethyl chloroformate and the product is treated with 2 : 6-dimethylaniline to give omega-diethylamino-2 : 6-dimethylacetanilide; and (2) 2 : 4 : 6-trimethylaniline is converted to omega - diethylamino - 2 : 4 : 6 - trimethylacetanilide by the process of (1).
