Abstract

The invention comprises octahydro-indolo-quinolines (ergolenes) of the formula <FORM:0774992/IV(b)/1> where R1 is C1-C8 alkyl, and acid additio salts thereof. These are made by acid hydrolysis of their esters (see Specification 774,991), or of N - acyl - 7 - alkyl - 9 - cyano - ergolenes (see Specification 774,990), or alkaline hydrolysis in the case of the esters. Examples are given of the preparation of 9-carboxy-7-methyl-10-ergolene (via its hydrochloride) by both methods. The products may be dehydrogenated to lysergic acid or a homologue thereof as described in Specification 774,984.
