Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0961265/C1/1> (wherein R is alkyl or alkenyl, R1 is methyl or ethyl, R11 is hydrogen or alkyl, R111 is hydrogen or alkyl and R1111 is alkyl, or R111 and R1111 may be joined directly or via a further hetero atom to form a saturated heterocyclic radical) and their preparation by (1) reacting a compound of the formula: <FORM:0961265/C1/2> (wherein X is a reactive group such as a halogen atom or an alkyl- or aryl-sulphonyl group) with the appropriate 3-alkoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylacetic acid ester; or (2) reacting a 3-alkoxy-4-(a -carbalkoxy)-phenyl acetic acid ester or a reactive functional derivative thereof, with the appropriate hydroxylamine NH.R111.OR1111 or a reactive derivative thereof; or (3) reacting an acid of the formula: <FORM:0961265/C1/3> or a reactive derivative thereof with the appropriate alcohol ROH or a reactive ester thereof such as a halide. Examples are given. 3-Methoxy-4-carbomethoxy-phenylacetic acid n-propyl ester is prepared from homovanillic acid n-propyl ester and sodium chloroacetate. 3-Methoxy - 4 - (N-ethoxy - N - ethylcarbamido-methoxy)-phenyl acetic acid is prepared by saponification of the propyl esters.
