Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0829054/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 is a C1-4 alkyl radical or hydrogen atom, R2 is a C1-7 alkyl, benzyl, phenyl or furyl radical, and Ar is phenyl or phenyl substituted by methyl, ethyl, methoxy or ethoxy radicals) and the salts of the free acids, preferably those with ethanolamine, and the preparation thereof by: (1) when R1 is a hydrogen atom and R2 a methyl radical, consecutively reacting a compound of the general formula Ar-NH-NH-Ar with a chloroformic acid ester and diketene, and cyclising the resultant intermediate product by heating with a solution of an alcoholate, preferably sodium alcoholate in ethanol (Claisen condensation); (2) condensing a compound of the general formula Ar-NH-NH-Ar with an acyl malonic acid ester of the general formula <FORM:0829054/IV (b)/2> (wherein R1 is a lower alkyl radical) and, if desired, hydrolysing off R1. Acyl malonic esters of the general formula II may be made by reacting sodium malonic ester with an acyl chloride of the general formula R2COCl. p,p1-Azophenetole is a by-product of reacting hydrazophenetole in the presence of dry pyridine with chloroformic acid ethyl ester (Example 3). 1,2-Diphenyl - 4 - furoyl - pyrazolidine - dione-(3,5) is obtained as a by-product from hydrazobenzene and furoyl malonic ester (Example 13).
