Abstract

Phenylethylbenzoic acid compounds of the formula: <FORM:0937378/IV(a)/1> where each of R and R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, aryl or aralkyl radical and Y is a hydrogen atom or a cation providing the phenylethylbenzoic acid compound as a salt, are obtained by contacting a hydroxyphenyl ethyl benzoic acid compound of the formula: <FORM:0937378/IV(a)/2> where R, R1 and Y are as above, with hydrogen in the presence of palladium at a pH greater than about 5. Alternatively precursors having the formulae: <FORM:0937378/IV(a)/3> may be employed as starting compounds. The keto benzoic acid compound may be obtained by saponifying a benzal-phthalide of the formula: <FORM:0937378/IV(a)/4> Alternatively a 3-benzylphalide may be hydrolysed to provide the hydroxyphenylethyl benzoic acid compound.
