Process for the production of compounds of general formula I, ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 signifies a chlorine atom, an alkoxide radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive or an alkylmercapto radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive, and R2 means an alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms inclusive; and its acid addition salts; which is characterized in that a compound of general formula IV, ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 and R2 have the respective above meanings, is dehydrated by a method for separating the aqueous elements of a thiaxanthene hydroxide to give a thiaxanthone, to form the desired compound I and, when an acid addition salt is required, effect the salification with an organic or inorganic acid.
