Procedure for the preparation of new 4- (4-biphenyl) -4-hydroxy-butyric acids, their esters or lactones of the general formulas I and II **(See formula)** wherein R1 signifies a hydrogen or halogen atom, or cyano, nitro group, or an amino group optionally substituted by an acyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R2 means a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alcohol radical with 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R3 signifies a hydrogen or halogen atom; and R4 means a hydrogen atom or an alcoholic group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and, if R4 represents a hydrogen atom, its physiologically compatible salts with organic or inorganic acids, characterized in that a 4- is reacted lithium-biphenyl of the general formula III **(See formula)** in which the radicals to R1 to R3 have the meanings indicated above, with a lower alcoholic ester of beta-formylpropionic acid of the general formula IV OCH-CH2-CH2-COOR5 (IV) where R5 signifies a lower alcohol group with 1 to 3 carbon atoms; and a compound of the general formula I thus obtained in which R4 represents an alcoholic radical is transformed, if desired, by means of hydrolysis into a free acid and, if a compound of the general formula I is thus obtained, in which R4 represents a hydrogen atom, this is transformed, if desired, into a physiologically compatible salt by means of an organic or inorganic base, and/or by means of methods customary in other esters of the general formula I, preferably passing through its acid halide, or in lactones of the general formula II.
