Procedure for the preparation of new 4- (4-biphenyl) -4-hydroxy-butyric acids, their esters or lactones of the general formulas I and II **(See formula)** wherein R1 signifies a hydrogen or halogen atom, the cyano, nitro group, or an amino group optionally substituted by an acyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R2 means a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alcohol radical with 1 to 3 carbon atoms; R3 signifies a hydrogen or halogen atom; and R4 means a hydrogen atom or an alcohol group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and, if R4 represents a hydrogen atom, its physiologically compatible salts with organic or inorganic acids, characterized in that it is reacted by the addition of water with a 3- (4-biphenyl) -3-butenoic acid derivative of the general formula III **(See formula)** wherein R1 to R4 have the meanings mentioned above; and the compound obtained of the general formula II is cleaved, if desired, by hydrolysis to form a compound of the general formula I; and a compound of the general formula I, in which it represents a hydrogen atom, is transformed, if desired, into a physiologically compatible salt by means of an organic or inorganic base, and/or by means of usual methods in its esters of the general formula I, preferably through its acid halide.
