Procedure for the preparation of hydroxycotonic acids of the general formula I **(See formula)** where R is a branched or unbranched alcohol radical with 1 to 8 carbon atoms, a 5-, 6- or 7-membered cycloalkoxy radical, which may optionally be substituted by an alcohol radical with 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a group cyano, a pyrrolidino or piperidino radical or the allyloxy group; and X signifies a halogen atom or the nitro, cyano or methoxy group, and of its salts with organic or inorganic bases, characterized in that an oxochrotonic acid of the general formula II is reduced **(See formula)** wherein the radicals R and X are as defined above, and eventually a compound thus obtained of the general formula I is transformed into its salts by means of organic or inorganic bases.
