Abstract

Basic esters of pyridine carboxylic acids of the formula <FORM:1037380/C2/1> in which R1 and R4 are hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy or alkyl groups, and R2 and R3 are alkyl groups are made by subjecting a mixture of the corresponding pyridine carboxylic acid and the dialkylaminoethanol to continuous azeotropic distillation with a neutral organic solvent, b.pt. 130-160 DEG C., in order to remove the reaction water. Suitable solvents are chlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, xylene and cumene. Examples relate to the preparation of the diethylamino-ethyl esters of nicotinic and isonicotinic acids.
