Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0588960/IV/1> wherein R1 represents alkyl or aralkyl and R2 and R3 represent hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl are obtained by treating an N-haloacyl-S-alkyl (or aralkyl-) cysteine with a lower fatty acid anhydride R.COOH, where R is an alkyl group containing not more than three carbon atoms and an organic tertiary base each being present in the proportion of at least three molecules per molecule of cysteine derivative. In an example, N - phenylchloroacetyl - S - ethyl cysteine was added to dry pyridine in acetic anhydride to obtain 2 - benzyl - 4 - ethylthiomethylene - 5 - oxazolone.
