Abstract
Mercapto-carboxylic acids, or the corresponding salts or amides thereof, are prepared by reacting with the addition of heat in a solvent in which the reactants are at least partially soluble alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, or the corresponding salts or amides, with a substance which is a source of the sulphydrate ion in an amount at least substantially molarly equal to said unsaturated compounds. The source of the sulphydrate ion may be any alkali or alkaline earth metal sulphydrate such as sodium sulphydrate, or may be a substance which will form the sulphydrate ion when put into solution by hydrolysis e.g. sodium sulphide. The reaction may be carried out in water, water-alcohol or alcohol solutions. Carboxylic acids mentioned are maleic, fumaric, crotonic, sorbic and cinnamic acids and their sodium salts and amides thereof. p The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of esters of mercapto-carboxylic acids from esters of alphabeta unsaturated carboxylic acids by the above process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
