Abstract

Iodinated pyridone derivatives of carboxylic acids of the general formula <FORM:0653365/IV (b)/1> wherein Y is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing from 5 to 9 carbon atoms, are prepared by heating 3,5-diiodo-4-pyridone with a halocarboxylic acid of the formula X-Y-COOH, wherein X is halogen and Y has the above significance, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and then acidifying the reaction product. The desired iodinated pyridone derivatives may be of the formula <FORM:0653365/IV (b)/2> wherein R is an alkyl group containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms. Salts of the iodinated pyridone derivatives may be formed with inorganic or organic bases, e.g. sodium hydroxide, diethanolamine or diethylamine. In the examples the following compounds are prepared: alpha - n - butyl-, alpha - n - amyl-, alpha-n-hexyl-, alpha-isoamyl-, alpha-n-heptyl-, alpha-n-octyl- and alpha-isobutyl-3,5-diiodo-4-oxo - 1 - pyridineacetic acids. Specifications 385,214 and 396,414 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the preparation of compounds of the above general formula wherein Y represents any divalent hydrocarbon radical. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:An internal radiopaque is obtained by dissolving an iodinated pyridone derivative of the general formula <FORM:0653365/VI/1> wherein Y is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing from 5 to 9 carbon atoms, in an aqueous solution of an equivalent amount of sodium hydroxide, diethylamine or diethanolamine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, refers to internal radiopaque obtained as above but where Y represents any divalent hydrocarbon radical. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
