Abstract
1 - Hydroxy - 2 - carbamylnaphthyl - 4 - tartronic acids of the general formula <FORM:0747628/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 represents H or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical and R2 a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical are prepared by treating the corresponding 1 - hydroxy - 2 - carbamylnaphthyl - 4 - alloxans with alkali to obtain the salts and acidifying to obtain the acids. R1 and R2 may be alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl, which may contain halogen, alkoxy, or acylamino substituents. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - N - cetylcarbamylnaphthyl - 4 - tartronic acid is prepared by heating 1-hydroxy-2 - N - cetylcarbamylnaphthyl - 4 - alloxan with aqueous caustic soda solution and acidifying with hydrochloric acid. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - N - methyl:N - octadecylcarbamylnaphthyl - 4 - tartronic acid is similarly prepared. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - N - cetylcarbamylnaphthyl - 4 - alloxan is prepared by adding alloxan monohydrate to a glacial acetic acid solution of 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoyl - cetylamide and acidifying. 1 - Hydroxy - 2 - N - methyl:N - octadecylcarbamylnaphthyl - 4 - alloxan is similarly prepared.
