Abstract
3-Pyrazolidones are obtained by hydrolysing 3-aminopyrazolines (or 3-iminopyrazolidines) of the formula <FORM:0679677/IV (b)/1> (which may be obtained as in Specification 679,678); R1 is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or corresponding substituted groups and R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or corresponding substituted groups; hydrolysis is effected with a non-oxidizing acid such as sulphuric, hydrochloric, hydrobromic, phosphoric, acetic or p-toluene sulphonic. The aminopyrazoline may be heated with an exact equivalent of dilute aqueous acid, or alternatively an aqueous solution of the acid salt of the aminopyrazoline may be heated. Examples show the production of the following substituted 3-pyrazolidones: 1-phenyl, 1-p-chlorophenyl, 1-p-tolyl, 1 : 5-diphenyl, 1-m-tolyl, 1-phenyl-4- and 5-methyl and 1-m- and p-tolyl-5-phenyl.
