Abstract

Pentaenes are obtained by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0672164/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an acyl or an alkyl group and R1 is an acyl group or hydrogen, dissolved in a halogenated hydrocarbon having a high dipole moment, e.g. chloroform, with an aqueous hydrogen halide, e.g. aqueous hydrobromic acid, without heating, and splitting off hydrogen halide from the halogen compound obtained in the presence of water or a basic substance. Detailed examples are given.
