Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0947606/C2/1> in which X is hydrogen, a halogen or a sulphonic acid group; one Y is a hydrogen atom or a sulphonic acid group, and the other Y is a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy or sulphonic acid group and the naphthalene nucleus may carry additional sulphonic acid groups, provided that the compounds contain 1 or 2 sulphonic acid groups. The compounds are made by heating piperazine with a naphthalene compound of the formula: <FORM:0947606/C2/2> in which Z is -OH or -NH2 possibly with additional sulphonic acid groups, as above. The process may be carried out by heating in water at a temperature between 90 DEG and 150 DEG C. and preferably in the presence of an alkali metal sulphite or bisulphite. Numerous examples of compounds prepared are given. The compounds are used as intermediate for making dye stuffs.
