Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0884637/IV (b)/1> in which R1 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group and R2 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms and a process for their preparation which comprises subjecting to treatment with a strong base a compound of the formula Y-CH2-CH2-CHR1COR2 where Y is a halogen atom. In the example a -acetyl-g -butyrolactone is converted to its sodio derivative and reacted with methyl iodide to give the a -methyl compound which is treated with hydrochloric acid to give 3-methyl-1-chloro-4-pentanone and this compound cyclised by heating with caustic soda to give a -acetyl-a -methyl - cyclopropane. 1 - methyl - cyclopropane carboxylic acid may be prepared by oxidising a - acetyl - a - methyl - cyclopropane with hypobromono acid.
