Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0957646/C2/1> wherein R1 is a lower alkyl group (1-6 carbon atoms), or an acyl group, R2 is an acyloxy or a keto group and R3 is hydrogen, a bromo, or a chloro atom, and a process for the preparation of the foregoing compounds in which R3 is hydrogen by reacting a compound of the formula: <FORM:0957646/C2/2> wherein R1 and R2 have the meanings as defined above, with hypobromous acid, hypochlorous acid, or a compound capable of supplying one of these acids during the reaction to obtain the corresponding 9a -hydroxy-11 b -halo-compound, after which the 11 b -halo-substituent is split off by reaction with a dehalogenating agent. As halogenating agent there may be used an N-bromo-acylamide or -acylimide and as dehalogenating agent there may be used Raney nickel.
