Abstract

The invention comprises compounds having in their enolic form the formula <FORM:0749196/IV(a)/1> wherein R is hydrogen, a -hydroxy, b -hydroxy or ketonic oxygen, and their alkali metal compounds, and the preparation thereof by treating a steroid substituted in position 17 by <FORM:0749196/IV(a)/2> with an alkyl formate in the presence of an alkali metal or an alkali-metal base, e.g. sodium methoxide, sodium ethoxide, potassium t-butoxide, sodium, potassium, lithium, their amides and hydrides. As alkyl formate there may be used methyl or ethyl formate. The reaction may be effected under anhydrous conditions between 0 DEG C. and the b.p. of the reaction mixture. Examples describe the preparation of 21-formylprogesterone, 11a -hydroxy-21-formylprogesterone, 11 - b - hydroxy - 21 - formylprogesterone, 11 - keto - 21 - formylprogesterone and the sodium enolates thereof.
