Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for making sulphonic esters of the formula <FORM:0672691/IV (b)/1> where R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and R2 and R3 are alkyl (C1-5), phenyl or naphthyl (which may be substituted), is modified by converting the corresponding alcohols into alkoxides, using a reactive metal such as sodium, potassium or lithium, and treating these with the appropriate sulphonyl halide. Both steps may be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent without isolation of the alkoxide. Examples show the preparation of the bis-p-toluene sulphonic esters of bis-hydroxyethylaniline and bis-hydroxyethyl-p-chloraniline.
