Abstract
Compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0562314/IV/1> where R1 is an alkyl group and R2 is an alkyl or substituted alkyl or fatty acid ester group are prepared by reacting compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0562314/IV/2> which can be prepared by the process described and claimed in Specification 562,313, with an alkyl or substituted alkyl halide or halogenated fatty acid ester in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent such as sodium ethylate. In examples: (1) 2-carbethoxy-3-keto-tetrahydrothiophene, prepared as in Specification 562,313 is treated, in the presence of sodium ethylate, with b -iodopropionic ethyl ester. The product is acidified, extracted with ester, washed, dried, and distilled under reduced pressure to yield 2 - carbethoxy - 2 - (b - carbethoxyethyl) - 3 - keto - tetrahydrothiophene; (2) in analogous manner using #s-iodopropylmalonic ethyl ester there is obtained 2 - carbethoxy - 2 - (#s - dicarbethoxy butyl)-3-keto-tetrahydrothiophene.
