Abstract

The invention comprises derivatives of D 4 : 5; 16 : 17 - pregnadiene - ol - (21) - dione-(3 : 20) of the general formula: <FORM:0736151/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents an aliphatic acyl radical and the preparation thereof by condensing D 5 : 6; 16 : 17 - pregnadiene - ol - (3) - one - 20 with an oxalic ester in the presence of a condensation agent, e.g. an alkali metal alcoholate and a solvent, treating the D 5 : 6; 16 : 17-pregnadiene - ol - (3) - one - (20) - oxalic ester - (21) so obtained in the form of an alkali salt of its enol compound with iodine, treating the 21-iodo - D 5 : 6; 16 : 17 - pregnadiene - ol - (3) - one-(20)-oxalic ester-(21) so obtained to split off acid therefrom, reacting the 21-iodo-D 5 : 6; 16 : 17-pregnadiene - ol - (3) - one - (20) so obtained with a salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, and oxidizing the reaction product so obtained to form a derivative of D 4 : 5; 16 : 17-pregnadiene-ol-(21)-dione-(3 : 20). The splitting off of acid from the 21-iodo-D 5 : 6; 16 : 17-pregnadiene-ol-(3)-one-(20)-oxalic acid ester may be effected in a solution of a metal alcoholate. Examples disclose the preparation of compounds of the above formula in which R represents methyl, trimethylmethyl and p-cyclopentylethyl. Specification 700,344 is referred to.
