Abstract

The invention comprises 20-methylene -5b - pregnan -11- one compounds having the general formula: <FORM:0967080/C1/1> in which R3 designates a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical derived from an organic acid and in which Y represents either the group -CHO or the group CH2OR3 where R3 has the previous specified meaning and a process for the preparation thereof in which the desired compound is extracted from a reaction mixture comprising the desired compound, a 21-hydroxy-20, 20-bis-hydroxymethylene -5b - pregnan -11- one and a 21-hydroxy -20- hydroxymethylene -5b - pregnan -11- one. The extraction may be effected by chromatography. Subsequent reduction gives 3a , 21-dihydroxy -20- methylene -5b - pregnan -11- one which may be acylated to form the 3a , 21-diacyloxy compound. The starting material may be obtained by oxidising 3a 21-dihydroxy-5b - pregn-17 (20)-en-11-one, and optionally thereafter acylating at the 3-position to form a 3a-acyloxy -5b - pregn-17 (20) -ene-11, 21-dione, reducing the 17 (20) double bond thereof and reacting the product with formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali in a water-miscible solvent.
