Abstract

The invention comprises 3#x-acyloxy-17a -acyloxy- 17a -hydroxy- 16a -methyl-pregna-11, 20-diones, 3#x,17-dihydroxy-16a -methyl-pregna-11,20 dione, 3#x-acyloxy-17a -hydroxy-16-methylene-pregnan-20-ones and 3#x-acyloxy-17a -hydroxy-16a -methyl-pregn-15-en-20-ones and processes for the preparation of 17a -hydroxy-16a -methyl-pregnan-20-ones having the formula:- <FORM:0934713/IV(a)/1> (wherein R represents either 2 hydrogen atoms or the oxygen atom of a ketone group and R1 represents either hydrogen or an acyl radical) in which a 16b -methyl-16a ,17a -epoxy-pregnan-20-one having the general formula <FORM:0934713/IV(a)/2> wherein R and R1 are as defined above, is treated with a dilute solution of a strong inorganic acid in an organic solvent, and the unsaturated derivative thus formed is thereafter reduced. As strong inorganic acid there may be used hydrochloric acid. The catalytic reduction may be effected with hydrogen in the presence of palladium black. The 16,17-epoxy starting compound may be obtained by thermolysis of the 16(C)a , 17(N)a -pyrazoline of 3#x-acyloxy-pregn-16-en-20-one to obtain 3#x-acyloxy-16-methyl-pregn-16-en-20-one and epoxidising this compound with hydrogen peroxide in alkaline medium.
