Abstract

The invention comprises 16:17-methylene-20-keto-steroids (including 19-nor-steroids) having at ring D the general formula <FORM:0930670/IV(a)/1> wherein Y and Z each represent hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or iodine, and the preparation thereof by treating 16-halomethyl-20-keto-steroids having at ring D the formula <FORM:0930670/IV(a)/2> wherein X represents chlorine, bromine or iodine, and Y and Z have the above significance, with an agent for splitting off hydrogen halide such as alkali metal hydroxides, alkali metal alcoholates in alcoholic solution, or organic bases-particularly collidine. 16:17-methylene-20-keto-pregnenolones prepared by the above process may be oxidised, for example, by the Oppenauer reaction, to form 16:17-methylene-progesterones. 16a -Tribromomethyl-progesterone is prepared by oxidising 16a -tribromomethyl-pregnenolone with cyclohexanone and aluminium isoproprylate.
