Abstract

The invention comprises 16b -methyl16a ,17a -epoxy-pregnan-20-ones having the formula: <FORM:0934702/IV(a)/1> in which 'R' is two hydrogen atoms or the oxygen atom of a ketone group, and R1 represents hydrogen or (when R is hydrogen) an acyl group and processes for the preparation thereof by epoxidising a compound of the formula: <FORM:0934702/IV(a)/2> in which R is as defined above and R2 is acyl, to obtain the corresponding 16a ,17a -epoxy derivative in which R1 is either hydrogen or an acyl radical which may be the same or different from R2. Epoxidation may be effected with hydrogen peroxide in alkaline medium. Subsequently the 16,17-oxido compounds may be treated with a strong inorganic acid, e.g. HBr to form the 16b -halomethyl-pregn-16-en-20-ones having the formula: <FORM:0934702/IV(a)/3> wherein X is halogen, 'R' is as defined above and R1 is an acyl radical. 3#x-Acyloxy-16-methyl-pregn-16-en-20-one employed as starting compound is obtained by thermolysis from the corresponding a a -[16(C)17(N)]-pyrazolino-3#x-acyloxy-pregn-4-16-en-20-one.
