Abstract

Polynitro compounds having the general formula: <FORM:0955352/C2/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical; and R and R2 are hydrogen atoms, alkyl or nitroalkyl radicals, are made by reacting a nitroolefin having the general formula: <FORM:0955352/C2/2> with nitric acid; wherein R3 and R4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, nitroalkyl, or nitroalkenyl radicals. The reaction is preferably effected in the temperature range from 25 DEG to 50 DEG C. using an aqueous solution of nitric acid of from 35 to 90% concentration. A detailed example describes the preparation of 2, 2, 3-trinitrobutane from 2-nitro-2-butene. The preparations of 1, 2, 2-trinitropropane, 1, 2,2-trinitrobutane, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 4-hexanitrobutane, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5-hexanitrohexane 2, 2, 3, 5-tetranitropentane and 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5-hexanitrohexane are outlined.
