Abstract
The invention comprises the alkali metal salts of 2,4 - dinitro - 1 - (N - methyl - ethionylamino)-benzene, 4 - nitro - 1 - (N - methyl - ethionylamino) - benzene, 4 - nitro - 1 - (N - n - butylethionylamino) - benzene, 2 - chloro - 4 - nitro-1 - ethionylamino - benzene, 2,5 - dinitro - 1 -ethionylamino - benzene, 2 - chloro - 5 - methoxy - 4,6 - dinitro - 1 - ethionylamino - benzene, 2,4 - dinitro - 3,6 - dimethyl - 1 - ethionylaminobenzene and 2-chloro-4,6-dinitro-1-ethionylamino-benzene, and a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula <FORM:1009014/C2/1> in which A represents a benzene radical which may contain further substituents (e.g. halogen atoms or alkyl, alkoxy or nitro groups), R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group and n represents 1 or 2, which comprises treating a compound of the formula <FORM:1009014/C2/2> with nitric acid or a mixture of nitric acid and sulphuric acid at a temperature in the range of from -20 DEG to +70 DEG C. Preferred starting materials have the formula <FORM:1009014/C2/3> in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl group, R2 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 4 alkoxy or C1- 4 alkyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl group and R4 represents a hydrogen atom or a nitro group. The products may be isolated by diluting the reaction mixture with ice and salting out the compound with an alkali metal chloride or sulphate.
