Abstract
Water-soluble organic copper compounds are prepared by reacting copper pentachlorophenate with an excess of a quaternary compound of the formula (R1.R2.R3.R4) N.X, wherein R1 and R2 represent aliphatic radicals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R3 represents a paraffin radical of 8 to 24 carbon atoms, R4 represents a benzyl radical or a benzyl radical which is substituted in the aromatic nucleus by at least one aliphatic radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen atom or nitro group, and X represents an anion. R1 and R2 are preferably methyl groups; R3 is preferably a cetyl, stearyl, lauryl or palmityl radical; and X is preferably a chlorine or bromine atom or a sulphate radical. The copper pentachlorophenate may be formed in situ from an alkali metal pentachlorophenate and the equivalent amount of a copper salt during the reaction with the quaternary compound. The quaternary compound is preferably used in an excess of 0.2 to 10 mols. The reaction is preferably carried out in the melt at a temperature of between 20 DEG and 100 DEG C. and, if desired, a small amount of water or alcohol can be present during the reaction. The pastelike products may be stabilized against ageing and increase in temperature by the addition of colloidal silica. In the examples, stearyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and cetyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium chloride are reacted with copper pentachlorophenate or mixtures yielding same, viz. copper formate and sodium pentachlorophenate, copper sulphate and sodium pentachlorophenate and copper acetate and sodium pentachlorophenate.
