Abstract
Aromatic nitro compounds are manufactured by nitrating compounds of the general formula <FORM:0652276/IV (b)/1> (wherein R3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical of not more than 4 carbon atoms, and R4 and R5 are the same or different and represent hydrogen, halogen, or alkyl or alkoxy radicals of not more than 4 carbon atoms). The nitration is effected with concentrated sulphuric acid-nitric acid mixture, with 100 per cent nitric acid or with fuming nitric acid, and the temperature should be kept between -20 DEG and +10 DEG C., preferably about 0 DEG C. The starting materials and the products exist as structural (regular and pseudo) and optical isomers. Examples describe the nitration of the diacetate of dl-reg.-1-phenyl-2-dichloroacetamidopropane-1 : 3-diol, and of the triacetyl derivatives of dl-#Y- and dl-reg.-1-phenyl-, dl-#Y-1 - o - methylphenyl-, dl - #Y - 1 - m - methoxyphenyl-, dl-reg.-1-(31 : 41-dimethylphenyl)- and 1 - o - chlorophenyl - 2 - aminopropane - 1 : 3 - diol and dl - #Y - 2 - amino - 3 - phenylbutane - 1 : 3-diol.
