Abstract
The invention comprises nitroarylsilanes of the formula <FORM:0886048/IV (a)/1> where Ar is an arylene radical, Y is a C1-4 alkyl radical, X is halogen or an alkoxy or aryloxy radical, d is 1 to 3, and a is 0 to 8, and also comprises their corresponding polysiloxanes. The halosilanes are prepared by nitrating an arylhalosilane in an anhydrous organic solvent, e.g. chloroform, acetic acid and carbon tetrachloride. Suitable nitrating agents are nitric acid, and mixtures of nitric acid with sulphuric acid or of potassium nitrate and sulphuric acid. The alkoxy or aryloxy derivatives are obtained by esterification of the halosilanes with an alcohol or phenol, if desired in the presence of an acid acceptor. The polysiloxanes are prepared by hydrolysis of the silanes, with or without other silanes, or by nitration of arylpolysiloxanes. The silanes and siloxanes may be reduced to amino derivatives, which may be diazotized as described in Specification 870,467. The examples describe the preparation of: (1) and (2) beta-(nitrophenyl)-ethyl trichlorosilane (mixture of isomers); (3) a mixture of isomers of beta-(nitrophenyl) ethyl methyl dichlorosilane; (4) nitrophenyltrichlorosilane (o, m or p-isomers); (5) nitrophenyl-methyldichlorosilanes; (6) beta-(nitrophenyl)-ethylpolysiloxane; (7) nitro octa phenyl cyclotetrasiloxane; (8) beta-(nitrophenyl)-ethyl-triethoxysilane; (9) nitrophenyl triethoxysilane. Other alkoxy and phenoxy derivatives are mentioned.
