Abstract

The invention comprises tetranitro derivatives of dibenzo-1,3a,4,6a-tetraazapentalene having the formula: <FORM:0930304/IV(a)/1> and the preparation of such compounds by the direct nitration with nitric acid of dibenzo-1,3a,4,6a-tetraazapentalene, the concentration of the nitric acid with respect to the water present being chosen sufficiently high so that at any chosen reaction temperature substantially none of the corresponding dinitro compound is formed. The compounds are used as explosives. Specification 656,587 is referred to.
