Abstract
597,716. Ammonium nitrate explosives. WHETSTONE, J., TAYLOR, J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 24, 1945, No. 21719. [Class 9 (ii)] Ammonium nitrate explosives are produced by admixing at least a part of the ammonium nitrate in the form of a chemically stable liquid containing its ammonium nitrate in solution in non-volatile compounds at ordinary room temperature and containing at most only a small proportion of water not exceeding 20 per cent of the weight of the said liquid, an explosive sensitizing ingredient and any other desired component of the ammonium nitrate explosive composition. The said chemically stable non-volatile ammonium nitrate liquid, which may be used in the form of a gel containing a colloid dissolved therein, may comprise an ammonium nitrate-urea mixture having included therein, that the mixture is liquid at atmospheric temperatures, such quantities of one or more of the following compounds : hydrated salts such as " hypo " and sodium acetate and non-hydrated compounds such as ammonium sulphamate, -thiosulphate, -formate, - acetate, -thiocyanate, or -hypophosphite, acetamide, propionamide, anhydrous sodium acetate and methylamine nitrate. A suitable ammonium nitrate liquid consists of a mixture of (a) ammonium nitrate and calcium nitrate tetrahydrate, or (b) urea and ammonium thiocyanate in the ratio of 50 : 40 parts to which has been added 10 parts of ammonium nitrate. Explosive sensitizing ingredients specified are : nitroglycerine, pentaerythritol tetranitrate and cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine. Specification 597,718 is referred to, and Specification 391,196 and U.S.A. Specification 1,920,438 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
